But with Margaret..."

“
I alway try to adhere to the mantra of not speaking ill about the dead. But with Margaret Thatcher?

The best I can say of her is that she stood passionately by her convictions but from where I, and many others stood, those convictions wreaked havoc on millions of lives.

The words I would chisel on her headstone are: “She was a right-wing fanatic who surrounded herself with morally bankrupt lackeys and ripped the very heart out of this country.”

Her many supporters say her trade union reforms and her sale of council homes liberated society.

I say those reforms would have happened anyway (but without the vindictiveness), that she never believed in society and the only people she truly liberated were money-men.

She wrecked the chances of a generation of youngsters and callously threw older working men on to the scrapheap.

We saw OAPs locked inside cold flats, petrified of the world, and the young turn those same houses over for the price of a fix as drugs were their only freedom.

We saw families broken up and unemployment deliberately kept high so workers would accept poverty pay.

We saw state schools and NHS hospitals crumble, while the private ones flourished.

We saw our North Sea oil riches wasted and our nationalised industries flogged on the cheap to pay for her massive dole bill and allow the rich to receive billions of pounds in tax cuts.

Her cruelty, especially for a mother, was astonishing. She allowed entire communities to wither, encouraging those left behind to live off the state.

She was the mother to a generation of single mums, inventing overnight the sponging society her disciples so detest.

Because, like George Bush in Iraq, when she dropped her ideological bombs to crush opposition, she had no idea what she was going to put in place when the smoke cleared. Apart from a Poll Tax.

She brown-nosed despots like Pinochet, propped up apartheid in South Africa, saw off a Third World military power in the South Atlantic and cynically claimed she had made Britain great again.

I’d love to say that over the years my feelings have mellowed.

But to do so would betray the hundreds, or was it thousands, who committed suicide as a result of her policies.

Which truly would be speaking ill of the dead.
”

theremina:

whatmakespistachionuts:

Because it’s something I’ve been researching for a while now in preparation for something I’m (eventually) writing, I’ll briefly bring up one of the many things about Thatcher we should all remember. She reversed the previous Labour government’s policy of accepting refugees and exiles from Chile after the horrific U.S. backed coup which put Pinochet in power on Sept. 11th, 1973. This was a regime which dropped pregnant women out of aeroplanes, which tortured girls by putting live rats in their vaginas, which once held a man at gunpoint and gave him the choice: sodomise your son or we kill you both. It was announced today that Pablo Neruda will be exhumed to investigate claims that his death a few days after the coup was in fact an assassination by poison rather than cancer; if it was the former he would only be one of thousands of others killed or simply dissapeared because of their leftist leanings. This was all well known at the time, but Thatcher still denied there were any human rights abuses or any need to accomodate those still fleeing Chile. They weren’t just political allies (it should be noted the only reason the UK even won the Falklands war was the amount of help from Chile), they were also good friends, and when he was finally put under house arrest in the UK, Thatcher was lobbying for his release. Pinchoet’s Chile was also the first real testing ground for the virulent form of neoliberalism which Thatcher and Reagan would then happily adopt and impose throughout the 80s, a project that the current coalition is now intent on completing. If you want to see what current cuts and policy trends will do to the UK, look into what they did to Chile. One example: every year after the privatisation of the Chilean NHS cases of typhoid practically doubled (they had until then been dropping), jumping from around 3,000 to over 10,000 in the space of a few years. Poverty, malnutrition, unemployment, depression and alcoholism, all shot through the roof as the national industries and banks were privatised, and multinationals were allowed to return and establish monopolies which funnelled vast amounts of wealth and national resources out of Chile. The gap between rich and poor became an unbreachable chasm.

Against those making bland moral objections about people “celebrating her death” I say: if she didn’t want her death to be celebrated she shouldn’t have spent her life doing and defending such irredeemably terrible things.

What does ‘contributory welfare’ mean? | Liberal Conspiracy

What does ‘contributory welfare’ mean? | Liberal Conspiracy:
The idea behind ‘the contributory principle’ where ‘you get out what you put in’ sees the welfare state as a kind of insurance system. It is intended to appeal to people who, in Labour minister Liam Byrne’s words, ‘feel like they put an awful lot more in than they get back’. It appears that by ‘contribution’, Labour means ‘pay national insurance’. In practice, this means a welfare system which provides greater financial support for men, older people and able bodied people, and less support for women, young people and disabled people (as the former are all much more likely to have paid national insurance before needing support from the welfare state).

This seems to me to be a very limited view of what it means to ‘contribute’ to society. It doesn’t recognise parents who work hard to give their children the best start in life, people who spend their time caring for others rather than in paid employment, or the person who is too sick or disabled to hold down a job. It is not obviously ‘fair’, for example, that a millionaire ex-banker who loses their job should be deemed to have contributed more and receive more help from the state than someone who doesn’t work because they are caring for their severely disabled children.
